Community engagement key to eliminating schistosomiasis in Uganda hotspots
The goal of the study was to understand why some communities in Uganda have low participation in a program to treat schistosomiasis, a disease caused by parasitic worms. Researchers talked to people living near Lake Albert and found that factors like the size and taste of the drug, rumors, and lack of community integration were barriers to treatment. However, positive experiences with the treatment and knowledge about the disease's dangers encouraged people to participate. Providing free treatment at home and local education by community distributors also helped increase participation. Overall, improving community engagement and education, along with better training for distributors, can help more people get treated for schistosomiasis.
