Children born HIV-free show lower cognitive function and growth compared to peers.
Children born HIV-free in rural Zimbabwe have lower cognitive function and smaller head circumferences compared to children who are HIV-unexposed. This was found in a study that followed children from birth to age 7, using tests to measure mental processing, literacy, numeracy, executive function, and physical abilities. The research showed that children born HIV-free had poorer cognitive performance and physical growth, highlighting the importance of early interventions for their development.
