Iron supplementation in breastfed infants has no impact on growth.
Iron supplementation in young breastfed Gambian infants did not affect the duration of exclusive breastfeeding or growth. A study gave some infants iron supplements for 14 weeks and others a placebo. The researchers found that iron supplementation did not make infants stop breastfeeding earlier or affect their weight or length. The duration of exclusive breastfeeding also did not impact the infants' growth. This suggests that giving iron supplements to exclusively breastfed infants does not harm their feeding habits or growth.
