Malnutrition in Children Linked to Heart Changes, Risk of Dysfunction.
Children with acute moderate to severe malnutrition can experience changes in their heart function. A study looked at 82 kids, half with malnutrition and half healthy. They did tests like ECG and echocardiography. Kids with malnutrition showed ECG changes like prolonged PR interval and low-voltage ECG. Their hearts had subtle systolic dysfunction and diastolic dysfunction. The study found that malnourished children had lower muscle mass and reduced global longitudinal strain. These changes were more significant in severe malnutrition cases. Malnutrition can affect the heart in various ways, including electrolyte imbalances and edema.
