Critical Gap in Addressing Sexual Health Needs of Women with Psychosis
The study looked at whether the sexual and reproductive health needs of young women with psychosis were being met by a specific mental health service. They reviewed the records of 37 women and found that discussions about contraception and STI screening were rare. Many of the women had experienced intimate partner violence, sexual assault, substance misuse, and had children in safeguarding concerns. Only a small percentage used long-acting contraceptives, and there were unplanned pregnancies. The study concluded that there is a significant gap in addressing the sexual and reproductive health needs of these women, and suggested improvements like staff training, routine screening, and clearer referral pathways to community services.
