New formula strategy reduces severe gut condition risk in infants.
Fortifying breast milk with extensively hydrolyzed formulae instead of regular infant formulae may help reduce the severity of a serious gut condition called necrotizing enterocolitis in babies with complex heart defects. A study in Australia looked at 133 infants with heart issues, finding that using the special formulae led to fewer severe cases of the condition, without affecting the babies' growth. This suggests that this feeding strategy could be beneficial for these vulnerable infants.
