Children with low weight-for-height at higher risk of death from malnutrition.
The study looked at factors linked to death in children aged 6-59 months with severe malnutrition in Nigeria. They used data from two hospitals in 2022 and found that children with low weight-for-height had a higher risk of death than those with low arm circumference. Children with both kwashiorkor and low weight-for-height had the highest risk of death. Older children with marasmus were more likely to die than younger ones. Stunting did not show a significant link to mortality. Children with low weight-for-height need special attention, especially if they have oedema. Relying only on arm circumference to identify at-risk children is not enough.
